For over two decades, Gene Durden has been a fixture in the Buford High School community, shaping the girls’ basketball program into one of the most respected in the state. His passion for basketball is undeniable, but his commitment goes far beyond the game. Gene’s story is one of family, community, and lifelong dedication to helping young athletes succeed both on and off the court.A Coach’s Journey: From Player to Leader
Gene Durden’s love for basketball began early in life, inspired by someone close to his heart—his mother. Growing up, Gene tried his hand at various sports, but it was basketball that truly captured his spirit, thanks to the influence of his mother, a basketball player herself.
“Well, I got into basketball because my mother was a basketball player, and she had a big influence in my life. I tried a lot of other sports when I was younger, but I just fell in love with basketball, and she had a love for basketball. That’s a bond we shared. It’s always been a passion for me,” Gene recalls.
That passion carried him through his high school years, where he played in Lyonsburg, Georgia, and continued his basketball journey at a junior college in Brunswick, Georgia. It wasn’t just about the game for Gene—it was about the life lessons learned along the way.
“I wasn’t a very good player starting out, but because of my work habits, I achieved a lot,” Gene says. “Through basketball, I gained an education, and it became my calling. I knew it was what I wanted to do with my life.”Building a Legacy at Buford
Gene’s journey brought him to Buford High School, where he has been the head girls’ basketball coach for the past 20 years. Under his leadership, the Buford girls’ basketball program has grown into a powerhouse, known for its commitment to excellence and its focus on preparing athletes for success in life, not just on the court.
“I came to Buford for my family. I had the opportunity to coach at a lot of different places, but I wanted the best situation for my family,” Gene explains. “Buford offers the perfect mix—academics, athletics, and arts. My children had opportunities here they wouldn’t have had elsewhere, and I’ve had opportunities as a coach that I wouldn’t have had at other schools. It’s the total package.”
But what truly sets Buford apart for Gene is the community support. “The community is so involved. Whether it’s our Board of Education or the city, we get unmatched support across the board. It’s a blessing to be a part of it.”A Passion Beyond Basketball
For Gene, coaching is about much more than the game itself. His true calling lies in helping young athletes grow as individuals, teaching them valuable lessons about hard work, commitment, and life.
“Basketball is my love and passion, but it’s also my way to impact young players’ lives,” he says. “I get to invest in my players, and that’s something that money can’t buy. I always knew I wasn’t going to get rich coaching, but I get other riches that a lot of people don’t experience—being able to build relationships and influence young people in a positive way.”
Gene’s goal is to prepare his players for life beyond basketball. He believes that the challenges they face on the court will help them navigate life’s obstacles down the road.
“In our program, we work extremely hard, and there are so many lessons our athletes can carry with them when they leave. It’s all about preparation for life.”A Program Built on Family and Legacy
The concept of family runs deep in everything Gene does. His coaching staff includes members who have been with him for nearly 20 years, and his own son is part of the coaching team.
“I’m so blessed with the staff we’ve put together. They’re not just great coaches—they’re great people who care about the players both on and off the court,” Gene says. “We always laugh because each coach brings something special to the mix. It’s like a family.”
This sense of family extends to the Buford basketball program’s relationship with the community and its sponsors. Gene believes that businesses who support the program become part of something bigger than just basketball.
“At Buford, our basketball program is all about family. We want our sponsors to be part of that family too. We build relationships with them, and we go above and beyond to promote and support them. It’s a partnership that benefits everyone, from the players to the community.”Looking Ahead
As the new basketball season begins, Gene is excited about the unique mix of players he has on the team—veteran athletes, new transfers, and young talents ready to contribute.
“This year’s going to be a challenge, but it’s also an opportunity to see how we can put this team together and grow through the challenges,” he says. “The journey is what it’s all about.”
Gene’s passion for the game, his dedication to his players, and his love for the Buford community have made him a beloved figure in the town. He may not seek the spotlight, but his influence is felt in every game, every player, and every fan who comes out to support the Lady Wolves.Join the Buford Basketball Family
