Buford Lady Wolves 2008-2009 Season Summary
The 2007/2008 Lady Wolves Basketball Season will go down as one of the most successful seasons at Buford High School. The Lady Wolves advanced to their second straight “Elite Eight” AA state tournament and their 7th consecutive state AA appearance. The team compiled a 25 – 7 record and finished ranked as the #4 AA team in the final poll voted on by the Georgia Coaches Association. The Lady Wolves experienced a great post season ride that started in the region tournament and finished in Rome, GA as the eventual state champions of Wesleyan knocked the Lady Wolves of Buford out of the state tournament in the “Elite Eight.” But along the way, our Lady Wolves did their share of damage to other teams during the season and during the post season run. With four wins over AAA region champions Gainesville and AAA region runner-ups North Hall, the Lady Wolves clawed and fought a very tough and demanding schedule that prepared them for the post season. We beat AA state runner-up Paidea by 25 points in the region tournament and proceeded to beat 8 AA Putnam County and 26-1 5AA Region Champs Rutland on the post season march in the state tournament. Leading the way was a lone senior, Jennifer Tucker, which contributed her leadership, dedication and commitment to a great season for the Lady Wolves Basketball Program. Jenn did a tremendous job and her contributions to her team and program will be missed and never replaced.
Junior, Blanche Alverson was our leading rebounder and scorer averaging 15.8 points a game, while collecting over 7 rebounds per game. Blanche was also named Gwinnett County “Super Six’, 2nd Team AA All State, Gwinnett Tip Off Club Team of the Year, Region 6AA All Region Team, Gwinnett Tip Off Club Player of the Month of January, Jackson County Jingle Jam All Tournament Team, and has committed early to the University of Auburn. Junior, Jocelyn Danley lead our team in field goal % and was also named Region 6AA All Region Team, Gwinnett Tip Off Club Team of the Year Honorable Mention, Gwinnett Tip Off Club Player of the Month of November, Jackson County Jingle Jam All Tournament Team and has also committed early to Valdosta State College. Another junior, Michele Godwin was named to the Gwinnett Tip Off Club Team of the Year Honorable Mention, Gwinnett Tip Off Club Player of the Month of December, and lead the Lady Wolves in assists with over 4 a game. Also, for the second year in a row, senior Jennifer Tucker was recognized as the Gwinnett Tip Off Club Scholar-Athlete. All these young ladies’ accomplishments helped the Lady Wolves have one of the most successful seasons in the history of Buford High School and their hard work, commitment and dedication has helped paved the way for our teams of the future.
We hope that the 2007/2008 season will be remembered as one of the best in a tradition-rich program here at Buford. We hope our program has provided nothing but fond memories for the players, coaches, fans, and community of a wonder season which so many young ladies gave their all to please.
