Buford Lady Wolves 2008-2009 State Championship Season Summary
The season began with some “unfinished business” and by the end of the season we were “taking care of business”. The Lady Wolves accumulated a lengthy list of accomplishments. AA Girls Basketball State Champions for 2009 is at the top of the list. Other accomplishments include a 32-1 overall record, 2009 Region 6-AA Champions, Gwinnett Tip Off Club “Team of the Year”, Gwinnett Tip Off Club “Team of the Month, 2008/2009 Deep South Classic Champions, Undefeated region record of 17-0, and an undefeated home record of 12-0. The Lady Wolves averaged around 60 points per game while holding their opponents to only 42 points a game. The great success of this team can be attributed to the leadership of our eight seniors. This group never let up the intensity and pushed each other to perform at a high level. Blanche Alverson, Auburn signee, led the Lady Wolves in scoring with 15.8 ppg while averaging 6 boards game. Blanche was named AA State Player of the year by GACA and GA Sports Writer. She was named Player of the Year by the Gwinnett Daily Post, Gainesville Times and Region 6-AA. Blanche was named 1st team All-State GACA, 1st Team All-State GA Writer’s, Atlanta Tip Off Club “All Metro Team”, All-Gwinnett Team. Audrey Dorsey rounds out last year’s senior class. Audrey Dorsey received the Lady Wolf Award, which is our most prestigious team award in our program. This year’s senior class will be missed and never replaced because of the special characteristics each brought to our program and high school.
Complementing this senior class was a freshman who also racked up a list of accomplishments in her debut year. Andraya Carter led the team in assists, 4.2 apg, and steals, 3.0 spg. Andraya was named 1st Team All-State by GACA and GA Sports Writers. She was also named to the All Gwinnet Team 2009, Region 6-AA All Region Team, Atlanta Tip Off Club All Metro Team, Gainesville Times All Area Team, and Deep South Classic All Tournament Team. Andraya has three more years with Lady Wolves and we expect it will be exciting to watch her grow and mature as a player.
The 2008-2009 team has made history at Buford High School for their basketball, but they will be remembered by coaches and fans as a great team to watch play because of their love for the game and more importantly their love for their teammates. The ring will tarnish, but the memories will bring smiles to all faces for a life time. FAMILY!
